New Moon Intention Ritual: A Guide for Every House
The New Moon is the one phase you can't actually see.
She's there, she has to be, the moon doesn't stop existing, she's simply standing between the earth and the sun, her lit face turned away from us entirely. Complete darkness. And there's something in that hiddenness that makes her the exact right moment for setting an intention.
What the New Moon Actually Does
When everything outside is pitch dark, we're naturally drawn inward, down, into the parts of ourselves that don't usually see daylight. It's easier to reach what's normally out of sight. Like moving down a spiral staircase into your own unconscious, further than you'd go under any other sky.
This is exactly why intentions belong here, in the dark, and not out in the open. You don't throw a seed into full sunlight and expect it to take. It needs to go into the earth first, hidden, protected, where nothing can scorch it or reach in and disturb it before it's ready. Your intentions are the same. They're not for showing anyone. They're a private thing between you and the moon, planted deep, given nothing but darkness and quiet, so their potential can begin, unwatched.
There's something else happening astronomically at the New Moon that I find beautiful. The sun and moon are in conjunction, sitting together in the same sign, feminine and masculine, held in the same spot. Here's what makes it even lovelier to me: the moon moves fast, through a whole sign in about two and a half days, cycling through all twelve roughly every month. The sun moves slowly, spending about a month in each sign. So when a New Moon happens in, say, Taurus, sun and moon are meeting there together, briefly, before she races on. About six months later, the sun has travelled all the way around to the opposite sign, Scorpio, and the moon, sweeping back through Taurus again on her own faster rhythm, catches that exact moment. Sun and moon, facing each other from opposite signs, her fully lit by his light. It always makes me think of a seed being planted, an embrace, a beginning that isn't visible yet from the outside.
My New Moon Practice
I keep a notebook, just for this. At every New Moon, I write down what I'm ready to call in, usually around ten intentions, sometimes fewer. I write them in my own words, plainly, the way I'd actually say them to myself.
Then I let them go dark. I don't dig them up and check on them constantly. A seed doesn't grow faster for being pulled up to look at its roots.
Where the Six Months Comes In
That's the rhythm behind the six months: the sun slowly circling around to face her, the moon catching that exact moment on her own faster pass through the sky.
That's when I go back to the notebook. Not every New Moon, but it's worth doing regularly, flipping back to see what's ripening. What's come into being, even if it's not the full, finished version yet, just the first sign of it breaking the surface. What's quietly fallen away, because it was never really meant to grow. What still needs tending.
It's the same rhythm as the Full Moon release ritual, just the other half of it. She's the one who shows you, six months on, what she's actually done with what you gave her in the dark.
